CONCRETE

Concrete is a well-known italian post-core band active since the early 90s. they put out a full lenght cd ("nunc scio tenebris lux", soa rec.), a 10"ep ("patior ergo sum", soa rec.), a 7" ("sescenti sexaginta sex", soa rec.) and a split 7" with antisgammo (biba rec.) they are currently re-recording stuff from their early releases.

BEASTIE BOYS

While touring behind Hello Nasty, the Beasties regularly busted out hardcore songs by the likes of Agnostic Front, Minor Threat, and Reagan Youth--along with their own take on Billy Joel's "Big Shot." The move came as no surprise to anyone familiar with this EP, on which the B-Boys collaborated with AWOL and returned to the hardcore roots documented on Some Old Bullshit. At eight tracks in just over 11 minutes, this hardly qualifies as extended play.

Seattle's Engine Kid start off mellow, with Windshield, then erupt. Each song starts out with either tripped-out laziness or abstract heaviness, drifts off for at least 4 mins., then explodes in a whirlwind of mesmerizing drum tempoes and off-beat harmonics. The vocals range from spoken, to softly sung, to harsh screaming. The singer/guitarist Greg Anderson can be foung nowadays in Goatsnake. A masterpiece.

Love Lost But Not Forgotten

Love Lost But Not Forgotten (often shortened to LLBNF) was a screamo band from St. Peters, Missouri. The band formed in 1997 containing ex-members of End Over End and The Paxadils. Known for their violence on stage and unique vocals provided by a lineup that sometimes included two main vocalists (Prater and Schmidt both being solo vocals for the band at one time through the bands career) and a trio of guitarists (Fogelbach and Emerick also surviving the lifetime of the band, with Doerhoff re-emerging to make a few special appearances in their later years).

Joshua Fit For Battle

Joshua Fit For Battle was a prominent hardcore band based out of Newark, Delaware. Despite Joshua Fit For Battle’s effort to avoid categorization, both fans and critics often consider the band a product of the screamo uprise during the late 1990’s. The band was home to ex-members of several notable Delawarian bands, such as the Bessemer Process, Union, Coffin, and Year of the Comet. Joshua Fit For Battle’s career spanned from 1998 to 2005, until the group disbanded. The band’s releases are still distributed by distinguished screamo label Level Plane.Members of the group can now be found in various musical endeavors, such as Superstitions of the Sky, Interpol ,Hot Cross, Welcome the Plague Year, and a Petal Fallen. Three Shades of Dirty were a short lived band from Annapolis, MD, featuring ex-members of The Hated. They released a demo cassette entitled “Paper Roses” on Vermin Scum in 1990 and had a song on the “Superpowers” compilation cassette (Troubleman Unlimited’s first release). CODE 13

Code 13 is a Minneapolis, Minnesota-based hardcore band formed by ex-members of the defunct band Destroy.

Formation and History In the words of member Felix Havoc:

After Destroy broke up I hooked up with Tattoo Shane and Trevor Trend and began jamming with a series of drummers. We put up an ad at Extreme Noise and attracted Criminal Shane on drums. Code 13 was an attempt on my part to move past the grind and metal influence on Destroy back to a more old school hardcore sound. Still, Code 13 is not a retro-80’s band by any respect, although the 80’s influence is there, many of our songs clock in at speeds undreamed of in ‘82.Code 13’s music is hard for me to describe because we mix several different styles. I’m not saying we’re particularly original or groundbreaking, but our music was far from generic as well. Simply put, we didn’t all listen to just one style of music so our playing wasn’t rigidly influenced by one style either. We mixed sing-a-long 80’s hardcore like early 7 Seconds and Youth Brigade with fast-core like Dropdead and a touch of early DRI, straight edge hardcore, Swedish HC/ Japanese Thrash, 80’s anarcho-punk and some grind/power violence for a fast and powerful punk sound. Lyrically I’d have to say the individual versus society and issues of social control predominate.The name Code 13 comes from the police radio code for “officer down” and as you can guess our lyrics were heavily anti-police and authority. For a while four out of five of our shows were broken up by the man, but hardcore survives on the underground and so did we. At the time I felt like the hardcore/punk scene was too complacent and needed some really radical thrashing punk to bring band the anger and energy. I went out of my way to write radical, aggressive lyrics to go with the music. We stirred up no small controversy, posing with automatic weapons and singing about shooting cops. One anarchist squat in Paris actually wouldn’t let us play because we were “too militant” I knew we were doing something right then.All of the group’s albums to date have been on the Havoc Records label.

Office Killer (1998-1999) was formed by Pascal and René, who wanted to start a band in the style of Shotmaker, Assfactor 4, and Heroin. After some time without a band, Anti was eager to play again. On account of a classified ad, they found Maurice and Mark. Together they formed Office Killer somewhere at the end of 1998. Unfortunately the band only stayed together for one year.

The band broke up in June 2007.

After half a year of writing songs they played their first shows and a bit later they recorded four songs that appear on a self-released demo, as well as on the 12” titled “Cross your fingers for the epilogue”, released by Moment of Collapse and Sadness of Noise records. Well, it looks like I lost quite a bit of my music - which sucks big time.

The Endless Blockade is a powerviolence band that formed in 2003, in Toronto, Canada. Taking the foundations of the genre’s forebears (Crossed Out, No Comment, MITB, etc) and streamlining it for today’s harsh realities, The Endless Blockade is furious hardcore meets crawling sludge. Primitive is the Blockade’s second LP, following the debut LP Turn Illness Into A Weapon, several EPs and split LPs (with Iron Lung, Warzone Womyn and Hatred Surge). Primitive is the band’s most fully realized work thus far, with great care taken in tying the album together musically, visually and lyrically. SCOTT HULL’s mix is both clear and raw while GLYN SMYTH’s artwork visually represents the doomsday cults, fanatics and radicals that provide the backdrop for the LP’s deranged pace and surgically precise twists and turns. The Blockade’s affinity for the diseased power-electronics and noise genres (think Slogun, Whitehouse) also plays a more significant role on Primitive.

This band is fucking amazing! Why have I not heard of these until now?

The End?

Thanks to my girlfriend I don't think I will be posting here anymore. Why? Well. I'll tell you why.

The PC was running slow yesterday so for some unknown reason she deceided to re-boot it back to factory settings! All my music has now gone and I don't have enough time to rip/burn records and cds anymore as I have a full time evening job and look after my daughter during the day.

Utarid were a screamo band from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Members of the band went on to play in the bands i/am/rain, Kias Fansuri, Elisabelle Tears, Killeur Calculateur and Orbit Cinta Benjamin.Throughout their existence they released one 4-track demo, a split with the band Tiala from Tokyo, Australian screamo band Sophora, a split with Am I Dead Yet? And a 4 way split with The Mock Heroic, Am I Dead Yet? and A Fine Boat, That Coffin. They also had a number of tracks across various compilations.

Sophora are a pretty decent screamo band from Australia.

GIANTS CHAIR

Giants Chair was a band from fall of 1993 to the summer of 1997. Scott Hobart played guitar, wrote words and melodies, sang, and booked shows. Byron Collum wrote and played Bass Lines and fixed stuff. Paul Ackerman wrote and played drum parts and Drove a lot. Giant’s Chair was instrumental in creating the type of midwestern post hardcore/emo sound that bands like Traindodge, Riddle of Steel, The Life and Times, and Shiner have and continue to play (shiner even had a song named after the band). The Giant’s Chair discography includes 2 full lengths and 4 seven inches, most of the stuff was released on Caulfield Records. About 7 years after the band broke up a posthumous release of vinyl only material was released on Caulfield Records. The CD was untitled. The Band Cave In released a cover of the song The Callus on their CDEP Tides of Tomorrow that is extremely well done, however it fails to reach the level of the original. This is the only Known Giant’s Chair cover. All Giant’s Chair releases except Red and Clear (the vinyl version is out of print) are out of print. If you are a hardcore fan and are looking to find some stuff thats out of print your best bet is Ebay, sometimes you can get lucky with Amazon or Half.com as well. If you check ebay periodically you are sure to find the non-Caulfield 7 inches (splits with Boy’s Life an Ethel Meserve). They are the easiest out of print release to find. However if you can find Red and Clear or Purity and Control (both the 7 in. and LP)on vinyl consider yourself lucky. If you find the Purity and Control CD consider yourself extremely lucky, I have never seen it on Ebay or amazon, and I have only seen it once on half. Another alternative is to email Bernie Mcginn at Caulfield Records, he may still have a copy or two lying around of some of the Rare stuff. Where does one start… Cleons Down was a band consisting of members from The Suicide Machines, Roosevelt’s Inaugural Parade, King For A Day, and Tomorrow’s Gone. We exsisted from about the fall of 1995 to the summer of 1997. The sound was a combination of noise,hardcore,indie rock,and everything else that was happening in the 1990’s. Live shows were known for there intensity and chaos that usually resulted in some kind of damage to ourselves and instruments. This band was a bright spark ,in the life of 5 dudes, that was a reflection of the times. 1 guy who moved from Las Vegas to Detroit to follow his dreams of creating music,and 4 other guys who could never understand how he could drink a 40oz of Magnum in one gulp.Anybody remember the “40oz of Emo” stickers? Anyway,all of us still play music to this day! Dudes went on to play in Koufax,The Story So Far,The Bomb,Left in Ruin,and a bunch of other bands.It has been 10 years since the members of this band have all played together,even though we have all remained friends.Cleons Down will be playing one reunion show this fall 2007,simply because we all believe it is time to destroy some shit one last time. Seeing Means More was birthed in 2002 by 5 high school kids, starting off as a more traditional screamo band in the vein of Indian Summer, JR Ewing, and Funeral Diner. They played multiple shows around the San Francisco Bay area with such bands as Takaru, Under a Dying Sun, atriata and heart cross love. The band then later lost original bassist Eric and keyboardist Kyle, and broke up. Seeing Means More later reformed in the summer of 2003, adding a new guitarist, Henry, to the lineup. With their new guitarist and a growing passion for hardcore, Seeing Means More began writing new material that explored the boundaries of traditional screamo fused with metal/hardcore. Seeing Means More has played with some great acts such as: Sailboats, Funeral Diner, Peltier Road Massacre, Arturo Gatti, Horror City, le mal du pays, Comadre, maudlin, Heavy Heavy Low Low, Eleanor, The Jonbenet, Antagony and Suffokate. Dear Tonight is a 5-piece band from Brooklyn, NY. They provide a combination of raw energy, crafted musical arrangements and radical political/personal thought. Rather than being used as a space to explore and push the bounds musically and politically, it’s become just a stepping stone to TRL, arena rock and IPod commercials. Ryan, Pete, Randy, Dan and Marc of Dear Tonight are five friends who have formed a band to express their thoughts, passions, questions, and creations. The punk/hardcore scene can still be a place where folks of all ages come together and find common space to create, think, and act outside and against the hegemony of corporate rock and right-wing politics. It must have been around 1988 when LÄRM called its quits and Paul,Olav, Jos and Menno decided to call their new band SEEIN’RED. Menno did not stay long in SEEIN’RED because he moved to Amsterdam to complete his lawstudy and another reason to quit the band was the fact that he felt that belonging to the punkscene wasn’t that much fun anymore, the scene he used to know had changed too much, for Menno it was an end to an era.After Menno had left we asked Burt to join on Bas-guitar and Jos became the singer,Olav stayed on drums and Paul on guitar. In this early line-up we recorded our very first 4 songs, including “System”, a RONDOS cover song, who ended up on the INTIFADAH compilation LP. Soon after we had recorded this stuff Jos wanted to get back on bas because he didn’t feel Comfortable as a singer/frontman. We more or less made the decision to continue as a trio: Paul guitar & vocals, Olav drums and Jos bas & vocals, and that’s what the band still is nowadays.After leaving SEEIN RED, Burt moved on and would start his own bands: PROFOUND, MANLIFTINGBANNER, COLT TURKEY & DEAD STOOL PIGEON.Jos, Paul & Olav have been playing in various punk bands together since 1979: THE SEXTONS. DISTURBERS, TOTAL CHAOZ, LÄRM & SEEIN’RED. And beside those bands Paul & Olav used to play in: PROFOUND, MANLIFTINGBANNER and COLT TURKEY.Jos did spend some weeks in PROFOUND as well and played in ORWELL NATION and KRIEGSTANZ (both bands did split up), currently he’s in a new band called STAATHAAT.Musically SEEIN’RED was more or less a counter-reaction on LÄRM. At the time we were sick and tired of just playing short and fast hardcore songs and we wanted to go in a somewhat other direction.The initial stage of SEEIN’RED was an attempt to play a different style of punk-hardcore. Influenced by bands like the MINUTEMEN, FAITH, IGNITION, FUEL, FUGAZI etc, we tried to mix those influences with our own style, and some of that can be heard on our first records. But looking back at it, we never could play this sort of music really well.It became clear to us that with our limited musical abilities we should have sticked to what we were good at. We slowly drifted back to the fast and short style of raging punk thrash. And around the same time we were fucking blown away by bands like DROP DEAD and STACK, both bands had a big impact on us. It made us realize again, that this uncompromising style of punk was more our “cup of tea” and a far better way to express our frustration, boredom, oppression and anger!It doesn’t mean that SEEIN’RED is now about “bringing back the sound of LÄRM “, we think we do sound different nowadays and musically there are different punk styles we address. In fact we are influenced by all kinds of music, because there’s more music out there than just punk and hardcore. We also listen to 60’s beat & punk, jazz, blues, hip/hop, rock’n’roll, soul, indie-stuff, folk, country …etc. It’s all stuff we listen to and therefore an influence but you probably never heard it through all the fucking noise we make. We see ourselves as a political D.I.Y. punk band. The band is our vehicle for outrage, and a way to voice our political beliefs. And although it’s Paul who writes most of the lyrics, the band agrees on the content. We are also told that our lyrics are simple/sloganistic , and o.k. our writing skills are maybe not our strongest part, but it’s not a reason for us to not speak out. In fact the ‘simplicity’ of our lyrics is some way also our strength: The power of simplicity! It makes our lyrics really direct so you cannot mistake it for bullshit!Without going over the top, it’s important for a band to take themselves serious. It’s also because we are a punk band, and good punk bands do have a social conscience. That doesn’t mean that we don’t have fun, without our sense of humor we wouldn’t have survived the past fucking 26 years as a band. In fact humor is essential and punk should be fun, but we should not promote stupidity.To some extend our lyrics are a social commentary which reflect our vision on society and the world as we experience it . This sometimes is pessimistic, and often loaded with frustration and rage, but never without hope for some sort of political and revolutionary change.SEEIN’RED is not a human juke-box, we like to explain our lyrics. We pretty much hate it when the only reaction we get at our concerts is people shouting shit like: “Shut up and play!”. We won’t shut up or become silent in order to not preach to the converted , the “preaching” between our songs is an essential part of an SEEIN RED concert .there’s a lot of things that make us angry and we’re just trying to explain where this anger is coming from and what we are about.Punk is more than music to us and we try to bring our message to the soapbox that is our community. It can’t be denied that we were taking a lot of influences from the Dutch punk band RONDOS from Rotterdam, their records, lyrics and ideas had a big influence on us, and the way how they handled things with the Red Rock collective, their label: King Kong records, their fanzine: Raket and the Red Rat comic books etc, etc was a big inspiration .Halfway the 80’s we were definitely on the red side of the political spectrum. In fact Menno, the singer of LÄRM, was a member of the Communist Party and Paul & Olav have been members of the New Communist Party. Right now none of us are members of any political party but we support a few. We learn from many revolutionaries and we idolize none.LÄRM, SEEIN RED, MANLIFTINGBANNER etc did put red politics on the Dutch punk/HC map, still we are not just a commie band. Anyway to us Communism stands for the struggle of the working class and oppressed people against its oppressors, it’s the future society where the means of production, the world’s environment and the intellectual and scientific knowledge of humanity will no longer be the private property of a few, but the heritage of all. Communism -the human community, the collective being, the classless society-free of racism, sexism and homophobia remains the perspective for which we fight. We are part of a struggle that goes back thousands of years. Conditions change and some of the theory and strategy of communism has also changed, but we defend the basis of that struggle and see ourselves a part of that struggle.SEEIN RED is about anti-capitalism , we believe that the capitalist system breeds most, if not all, ills in this world. The competition for markets produces devastating wars and environmental destruction. Dark, heavy crust/metal band also from the Bay Area, in the vein of Amebix, Deviated Instinct, and Neurosis. Short lived,with two releases (self titled 7” and a split with Apeface), and not much known about the band itself. The band featured the drummer of Econochrist.

Apeface was one of the original crust type hardcore punk bands in San Jose. They incorporate classic punk riffs with scratchy glass gargling vocals not unlike Fingerprint. The music is generally melodic, mid tempo and catchy.

QUIXOTE / TRANS MEGETTI

Quixote was a post-hardcore band from Kalamazoo, MI. Formed somewhere in 1996, the band featured Joel Wick of Jihad (bass), Tony Uminn (guitar) and Paul Wartella (drums). At some point Mike Gard stepped in to fill Paul’s place behind the drum set. Quixote had released most of the records on Joel’s own Makoto Recordings. Their discography consists of a 7” entitled ‘A Force’, a self-titled CD, a split with The Trans Megetti and the ‘Protests Of The Weak’ 12”, plus they recorded for a couple compilations. The band broke up in 2000, Mike joined Keleton DMD, Joel played in Sealucky.

Some months back, Art Monk Construction received a demo from a group of guys known collectively as The Trans Megetti, who were easily living life on the sandy Jersey shore. Their statement of purpose was simple and succinct: "Once we get a van, all we have to do is play rock 'n' roll. Hi-fission, inter-stellar fuel propels their Drive Like Jehu-esque guitars (minus the self-indulgent noise) whilst a crooning urgency emulates from Mark's strangely Geoff Turner/Gray Matter vocals. Bass lines punctuate with the stability of a blind man refting the Jonestown Flood, as accompanied by the ever unrelenting beat. The four-piece known as The Trans Megetti has been together for over two years now, turning fashionably placid onlookers into whirling dervishes at first pick. A former school van (in all it's yellow splendor) has gotton them as far back as the Mid-West and up and down the East Coast of the USA, razing various venues from Oddfellows halls to CBGB's. Touring and two 7"s on Art Monk Construction have placed them on the map. Steal The Jet Keys - CD/LP released on Art Monk Construction in March 1998 - will firmly establish their uncontestable domination of it.

Joshua Fit For Battle was a prominent hardcore band based out of Newark, Delaware. Despite Joshua Fit For Battle’s effort to avoid categorization, both fans and critics often consider the band a product of the screamo uprise during the late 1990’s. The band was home to ex-members of several notable Delawarian bands, such as the Bessemer Process, Union, Coffin, and Year of the Comet. Joshua Fit For Battle’s career spanned from 1998 to 2005, until the group disbanded. The band’s releases are still distributed by distinguished screamo label Level Plane.Members of the group can now be found in various musical endeavors, such as Superstitions of the Sky, Interpol ,Hot Cross, Welcome the Plague Year, and a Petal Fallen.

Eucalypt was a screamo band from Sydney and Newcastle, New South Wales, often compared to European bands such as La Quiete and Raein. Formed in 2006, the band has released a 3” Demo CD (November 2006), a split with Melbourne’s Needletail (February 2007), and a split with Brisbane’s Sophora (June 2007). A vinyl release containing the songs from the Needletail split, along with others from the same recording session, is currently in the works, as well as a split with Majorca. The band’s guitarists take the unusual step (as far as screamo bands go) of playing entirely without distortion, despite a number of fast-paced sections and the aggressive drumming that punctuates most of their songs. Eucalypt features ex-members of Bene Gesserit and the john wayne gacy trust fund.

Born Against was a critically acclaimed left wing, hardcore punk band from New YorkThe band performed together in the four years between 1989 and 1993. Vocal duties were handled by Sam McPheeters (from Life’s Blood) and Adam Nathanson (also from Life’s Blood) was the key guitarist. The rhythm section frequently changed in its line-up, but some prominent temporary members of the band included Neil Burke (again from Life’s Blood) and Tonie Joy (from Universal Order of Armageddon and Moss Icon) on bass guitar, Melissa York (later in Team Dresch and The Butchies) and Brooks Headley (also from Universal Order of Armageddon) on drums. After Born Against disbanded, McPheeters formed Men’s Recovery Project with Burke and, later, Wrangler Brutes with Headley. Nathanson went on to form (Young) Pioneers.Born Against released several records on the independent label Vermiform Records. Albums included Nine Patriotic Hymns For Children and Battle Hymns For The Race War. Portrait existed in Atlanta, ga from 1996 until 2001. For many individuals portrait is one of the pioneers of the modern (circa 2002-2004) “screamo” sound. They released several albums: “all my chances” 7”, the s/t 10”, the debut 7”, the four song demo All of this and one extra song are on the Portrait “complete discography” cd from stickfigurerecords.The band has a very energetic sound. Tough but not too tough. Emotional but not too emotional. Agressive but not too… Great combination of guitar work with viola. This band has it all. From sweet melodic parts too Rough hardcore driven tunes. Portrait’s influences were such bands as inkwell, frail and Indian summer.

THE FESTIVAL OF DEAD DEER

Before there were Moving Units, Year Future, and Ground Unicorn Horn, there was Chris Hathwell, who plays in all three and there was his great, doomed punk band The Festival of Dead Deer. They were great because the noise they made could melt steel and boil blood, and they were doomed because they reared up fast, spat out beautiful music, then vanished into the ether. Their album The Many Faces Of Mental Illness (threeoneg) gives us 14 faces of mental illness in 44:57 minutes of frantic, stained-to-nothing vocals, sludgy razor sharp breakdowns, and song structure that bucks from one extreme to the next. We see guitar leads as attacking snakes, drums that co-opt hardcore’s blast beats and R&B’s submarine groove. It has all the screaming beauty of Gravity’s catalogue, the kind of angularity a million bands have since tried for, in turn turning the very idea of angularity (or at least the search for it) into a joke. This record isn’t a joke. It’s not a half-ass screamo cash in or a trend-searching fashion parade. Take all your preconceptions and theories of what punk is and flush ‘em down the fucking shitter. This is the sound of bones crushing to dust. Love it or get out of the way and pretend you’re not afraid to look the thing in the eye.

Moss Icon was an Annapolis, Maryland punk rock band from 1986 to 1991. The original members were Jonathan Vance, Tonie Joy, Monica DiGialleonardo, and Mark Laurence. Moss Icon are most known for their influence on the splinter genre of punk known as emotive hardcore (emo), and affiliation to the original DC bands born in the so-called “Revolution Summer” of 1985, including Rites of Spring, Gray Matter, Rain, Embrace, and Maryland’s Hated.The band’s identifying characteristics, and those that distinguish them from their contemporaries, include noticeable and abrupt transitions from loud to quiet, Joy’s distinct arpeggiated guitar (often undistorted and picked), and Vance’s esoteric, sometimes meandering lyrical content. Earlier recordings of the band are remniscent of early Joy Division, particularly in guitar style, while later songs embodied a less blunt approach, noted by some detractors as making Moss Icon “like Grateful Dead for punks.” The band championed, among other issues, the plight of indigenous peoples in the Americas, and opposed the US Government’s involvement in Nicaragua and Guatemala.Moss Icon recorded their debut 7”, “Hate in Me”, in January 1988 and entered the studio several months later to record their second 7”, Mahpuia Luta. Moss Icon’s third 7”, entitled “Memorial”, was recorded in January 1991 along with a split LP with Silver Bearing. In 1994 Ebullition Records released the It Disappears LP, compiling several songs from “Memorial” and the split LP along with live versions of several songs.After the dissolution of Moss Icon, guitarist Joy was a member of the bands Born Against, Lava, Universal Order of Armageddon, The Great Unraveling, and The Convocation Of… Other band members were less involved in music, excepting Laurence’s drums in Lava, and DiGialleonardo’s Blue Condors. Moss Icon reformed to play a handful of shows with Brooks Headley on drums, including the 2001 More Than Music Fest in Columbus, Ohio and at the renovated Charles Theatre in Baltimore, Maryland.

BRUCE BANNER - I'VE HAD IT WITH HUMANITY

Bruce Banner started out early 2000, we played out first show in August the same year together with THE OATH. In January 2001 out first 7” was realesed by Bent Edge Records/Sounds Of Betrayal Records here in Sweden. Summer 2001 we did go on our first europeantour and we also realesed a split 7” w/SAYYADINA that we did the tour with. In 2002 we did record for a split 7” with SOUND LIKE SHIT from Japan but it was released in late 2003. In April 2004 we entered the famous studio in Gröndal and recored our first album. It was released in July 2004 by Busted Heads Records in Sweden/Europe and by 625 Thrash Records in the Usa. We did a full Us-tour July/August 2004 together with DEADFALL from Bay Area to coincidence with the Lp/Cd realese. Fall 2004 Per H joined us at drums and in the beginning of 2005 Malcolm joined forces. In May/JUne we did a european tour that took us to England, France, Holland, Germany. October 2005 Tess joined us at vocals and here we are…We plan to record for a split 7” with B.U.S.H. from Brazil early December…The split 7” with B.U.S.H. is out and sold out…In April/May 2007 Bruce Banner decided to quit…so we are no more. This LP compilation started out as a benefit for Heartattack 'zine. I ended up getting far too much interest in the project, and half of the bands were moved to the Amnesia compilation.
The HeartattaCk #10 LP comes with a fold out cover, a 24 page booklet, and they were all pressed on yellow vinyl. The booklet includes band info and also contributions from various people that worked on HeartattaCk at the time.

SWEEP THE LEG JOHNNY

Sweep the Leg Johnny were a Chicago-based post rock band from the late 1990s. The name comes from a line in the film Karate Kid.Sweep the Leg Johnny were fronted by saxophonist and vocalist Steve Sostak, who decided to form the band after meeting Chris Daly at university in Notre Dame. Steve tried out many different instruments to accompany Chris’s guitar, eventually settling reluctantly on the saxophone. When they returned to America, they tried to recruit other members for the band and found drummer Scot Anna, whose open and free-sounding drum technique went well with Chris’s convoluted guitar work, which was based mainly on melodies rather than chords. The band then also recruited John Brady to play bass. The bass playing is often simplistic in melody, but serves excellently as a pulsing rhythmic accompaniment where otherwise the beat might have been lost in the chaos. Allegedly, the group would rehearse up to 25 hours a week to graft their seamless synchronization in songs, which paid off.In 1997 the band released 4.9.21.30 on Divot Records, which was a clean and open sounding album that had a sound similar perhaps to Yes or Slint, but really captured a style of its own encompassing brash speeding rock with much more sensitive slow-paced rock, within songs. The band took individual riffs and developed them within songs, looking at them in different lights, sometimes with vocals and sometimes without. Steve Sostak has said he writes lyrics when things in his life change; in other words he does not write lyrics for songs, as a lot of lyricists in rock bands do, to complete the sound. This relaxed attitude towards music-making allows a lot more freedom than the traditional rock formula, and sometimes requires more attention.The band’s second LP, Tomorrow We Will Run Faster, and subsequent albums, were released on Southern Records. Tomorrow… was mastered at Abbey Road Studios in London. Its five songs are all lengthy progressive songs that develop slowly, maturing, and climaxing fantastically, reminiscent of Godspeed You Black Emperor. Conversely, their third album Sto Cazzo (which means something akin to “f-ck you” in Italian) is a hectically-paced and chaotic frenzy of music which contrasts completely with Tomorrow. The two albums were released very close together, and Tomorrow ‘s dark navy cover and Sto Cazzo ‘s deep red one obviously portray the styles performed within. Sto Cazzo contains some of the most engaging rock music produced; furiously fast-paced, constantly changing, angry, and amazingly tight and synchronized, with songs flowing into one another seamlessly, this captures the essence of Sweep.After Sto Cazzo, guitarist Mitch Cheney of Rumah Sakit joined the band. He played in a dissonant and wandering style that contrasted well with the clean-cut interplay of the sax and guitar already there, to produce a very epic sound for their final LP, Goin’ Down Swinging. The album’s opening sax riff leads into the epic “Sometimes My Balls Feel Like Tits”, which combines the chaotic roller coaster variety of Sto Cazzo with the slowly maturing progressive sound of Tomorrow, and to some, it is the height of Sweep’s career. With the addition of Cheney, the group also decided to repair and modernize two of their older songs, “Rest Stop” and “The Blizzard of 99”, which are both made the more stunning with the addition of guitar, and the added energy they receive. Mitch also did the artwork for their last album, which features a bloodthirsty knight on horseback being lowered into some unseen battlefield.The band broke up some time after making their last album, having toured to excruciating lengths, and to some extent, made a conquest of the genre. Steve Sostak and John Brady are now in ZZZZ, a mystical musical group that carries some of the open-ended experimentation of Sweep, but with keys rather than guitars. Chris Daly was in a group with members of June of 44 and Hoover called Just A Fire, and Mitch Cheney is in a project called GREENESS; find out more on his Myspace page.Sweep briefly reformed for a benefit gig in Chicago near the end of 2005, but have no immediate plans to make any more music together.

INDEX FOR POTENTIAL SUICIDE

Index for Potential Suicide was formed in the summer of 1998 in Charleston, SC by Christopher Ashley of the noise/hardcore band Murder Weapon and Brian Cooper, Robert Findlater and Frank Whiteside of Intentional Resentment. The four’s love for noise and experimental music was the foundation for the band’s early material. As an experimental band with drum machines, samplers, synths, trumpet, etc. the band played shows and cleared rooms with Hail Mary, Milemarker, etc. and recorded a demo called “This Week’s Boycott. ” The band then shifted to a more traditional “rock” line-up added Shawn Williams of Prevail on bass and recorded the “s/t” 7” after 3 practices, with Williams learning most of the basslines the morning of the record session. Two 7”s, a full length CD, LP, a compilation appearance, 2 tours, a cancelled tour and a broken down van saw the end of Index for Potential Suicide. Members went on to form or play in Red Herring, The Avenging Disco Godfathers of Soul, The Disease and countless others.

Citizens Arrest was a hardcore punk band from New York, USA that existed from 1988-1990. Their music catalog consists of some comp tracks, an EP (A Light In The Darkness) followed by an LP (Colossus) released shortly after the group had disbanded. According to the former members, a discography CD is said be be coming out soon. The band consisted of Daryl Kahan on vocals, Janis Cakars on guitar, Joseph Martin on bass, and Patrick Winter on drums. Influences by bands like Siege,Negative FX, and SoA, Citizens Arrest played numerous times despite being around for only a couple years. Their music was a mix of hardcore bordering on thrash complimented by gruff vocals that made them sound like they were a Japanese band like S.O.B.or Gauze.Considered one of the seminal bands of the late 80’s N.Y. hardcore scene, many wonder what might have been if internal band conflicts wouldn’t have torn the band apart so early.Members went on to play in Taste of Fear, HellNo, Moses, One Sided War. and Forced Expression.

The Last Forty Seconds was a soulful, moody hardcore band that exsisted for only a short time in 1999/early 2000s, whose extremely emotive songs stood out due to the unique vocals of singer Andy Maddox. Iconoclast

Iconoclast formed in the early 90’s in New Jersey amidst a flourishing of diverse hardcore bands, such as Rorshach, Born Against, 1.6 band, Native Nod, Policy of 3, Merel, Greyhouse, Chisel. They recorded their self-titled first 7” for the Ebullition label, followed by a split 7” with the band Merel. Ebullition also released their ‘Groundlessness of Belief’ 7” and a discography on CD. Their last recording of new material before breaking up in 1994 was a split double 7” with the German band Abyss, released post mortem on Old Glory Records.Kent McClard of Ebullition describes them as, “powerful and energetic hardcore that combined the power and aggression of more traditional hardcore with the emotion of more melodic and passionate ’90s hardcore.” Pre-dating the conventional definition of “emo” or any of its permutations, Iconoclast pooled influences from both punk and indie bands of that era. The resulting sound was discordant and crashing, emotional and stirring.

As any fan of the ultra-extreme knows, IRON LUNG is a two piece mega-band featuring Reno scene mainstays Jon and Jenson (formerly of a million bands, labels, stores, etc.) Their rumbling, yet raging, take on CROSSED OUT meets GOB power violence is thematic in both lyrical and musical delivery. With the precision of a surgeon and the devastation of an unchecked disease IRON LUNG wreak havoc on any listener smart enough to tune them in and turn them up. It blows my mind that a record can sound both so primitive and so precise at the same time.

Burned Up Bled Dry

These boys are from Arkansas and apparently their idea of Southern Hospitality is to rip your face off with their ferocious grind. I'm still trying to figure out what I am going to do without my face.... BURNED UP BLED DRY's brand of core is an equal mixture of aggression and heaviness. Their punishing onslaught of noise pays homage to the blistering devastation of early 80's hate-core but their delivery is far more in the vein of nineties grindcore. One of the most appealing things about the record is the fact that the tunes, while not sacrificing one iota of power, manage to have some (dare I say it?) hooks. Southern Fried power violence? Could be, you know how them kids from the South are....
